This figure personifies the mountain goat, one of the many characters
in the Winter Dance. The ceremonial life of the Kwakiutl, and many
other Northwest Coast tribes, found expression principally in the
winter season, which was devoted to a series of rituals constituting
the Winter Dance. Only a select group of individuals were allowed
to participate in the ceremonies while the remainder of the tribe
acted as spectators.
